Compaq Presario V5000

Author: Anonymous

This is the OEM recovery for the Compaq Presario V5000. If you want to get this working, just take a bootsector from a stock Windows XP disc and transplant it onto the first disc of the set.

Custom boot screen?

This is the recovery program, courtesy of SoftThinks. This program, was basically THE go-to program for a few different OEMs for a while, including Compaq, HP, Gateway, and later on, I believe Dell had a solution that was basically somewhat rebranded SoftThinks.

Doesn't seem to be much to it for this one. Just click a few buttons, and it immediately starts restoring.

Just a quick note: I had a computer somewhat similar to this one (the V2000) at one point, but immediately wiped everything (including the original OEM install) for the original owner's sake, and I didn't have the discs. So, this is basically the closest thing I have to that.

Recovery is done!

Time to go through the OOBE, I guess

Here's a unique screen, complete with a way-too-big form that I assume was meant for a bigger screen.

I got this screen, but I probably can't do anything with it since the servers are long gone.

Here's a screenshot of the brand new HP-redesigned FBI utility. Looks a lot better than the interface from the #compaq-armada-7400-7800, that's for sure!

Here's yet another screen that pops up after first boot.

(PNG)

And here's the desktop! There are so many applications on this system that it'll take me a while to get through them all.

Let's just start with... whatever. There's so much stuff here, I don't know where to start.

(PNG)

First of all, let's boot up the classic WildTangent game launcher.

(PNG)

That's just about it for the WildTangent thing. I could show off some games, I guess.. but let's move on before half of this review is about WildTangent.

(PNG)

Here's HP Photosmart Premier. It's basically just a photo editing and viewing tool, as far as I know.

(PNG)

Tried to set up one of the programs, but of course, by now, any server that these programs are trying to connect to are probably dead.

(PNG)

Microsoft Works 8.0. Just about what you'd expect. There's also an Office 2003 60-day trial, but I don't think that's really worth the time to show off.

(PNG)

muvee autoProducer. Appears to be a basic video editor. To be honest, I'd rather use the included Windows Movie Maker of XP.

Don't know what's going on with the PCRA certificate, but okay then?

(PNG)

But hey, it works!

(PNG)

Netscape version

(PNG)

One of the only programs on this install that still surprisingly works: Norton. Being from 2006, it probably doesn't detect any recent viruses, but back in 2006, it was probably a great solution!

(PNG)

Quicken 2006. This obviously won't work nowadays, at least not for any online features. But, I guess it'd work fine if you didn't need the online features.

(PNG)

Sonic DigitalMedia Plus, complete with error message and Norton telling me something might be wrong.

(PNG)

Sonic Express Labeler. I guess this is an okay solution if you want to print off some quick labels for a random disc you have, lol

(PNG)

Sonic MyDVD. Good program if you want to make a DVD look like it came straight out of the mid 2000s, lol.

These window borders kinda remind me of Longhorn, to be honest. (Jigglypuff: That’s because it borrows the window borders from Longhorn’s slate theme.)

I think that's just about it when it comes to this disc. There was a LOT of software on this disc, it took me quite a while to get through all of it. Have fun!
