Windows NT 5.0 1717
Author: Blue Horizon This would end up being the last known build to feature the old style setup wizard found in earlier Beta 1 builds of NT 5.0 before build 1723 changes it to resemble more or less that of the final product. On the subject; it's odder how they chose Greenwich Mean Time as the default time zone rather than Pacific Time like how Windows 95 sets it. Was there more of a demand for NT in London or something? Either way, this ended up being changed in the aforementioned build. On the desktop, the icon for installing internet information server was removed, the temporary MSN setup shortcut was added, and the IE icon has been finalized to that of the blue 'e' logo. First I review a build of 98 which first introduced it, and now I'm looking at the first known NT 5.0 build to have it. I've come full circle. :P Oh yeah, and the Outlook Express icon was changed to that of the envelope variant. Windows NT 4.0 generally organized Start menu groups differently than what 9x traditionally does; having a dividing line between regular directories and more advanced system-level directories. This barrier is broken with this build's Start menu. Also, two explorers. Both of which open the same thing. Wow it cool ! In display properties, not only is the Web tab added back in from build 1691, but also, the Icons tab has been renamed to the Effects tab, as well as having an option to change the "My Documents" icon, as well as additional options for menu animations, smooth font edges, and window dragging much like in Windows 98. Also, an option to hide icons when viewing the desktop as a web page. Alongside IE's new version, a proper About dialog for IE 4 has been added in - although no version number is shown. The Easter egg is also identical to the one in retail. Splash for Outlook Express. In the About dialog, it is revealed that Outlook Express (and by extension IE), have a version number of 4.80 going from 4.72 from the previous build. Some sample mail is now included, beginning the reign of InfoBeat on NT. Oh Eee Has To Potty . It Will Self Destruct Explorer's web view toolbars have been changed to match the layout seen in Windows 98/IE 4, but those purple icons still remain. Oddly reminds me of Bart vs. the Space Mutants on the NES where the alien's genius plan is to turn objects purple. Not a screenshot from this build, but here's the dialog that displays when the network is cut off in build 1723. Captured when I was comparing builds. |
