Millennium 2348

With build 2348 comes a visually revamped Setup program. This is the new welcome dialog.

Nothing notable has changed between the dialog above and the first login.

System information, just upping the build number.

A new folder "Shared Documents" is created here, presumably so all users can access them regardless of who's logged in.

A new program "Acquisition Manager" is added to the Accessories group. I'm not sure what it does, but it's probably related to digital scanners and cameras.

This is a slightly newer version of Internet Explorer 5, not really close to 5.5 though.

Let's try something different... can the machine be hibernated?

(PNG)

Yes it can! But can it really? It's certainly going through the trouble of restoring the RAM contents saved to the hard disk.

My capture card tends to make the display shifted out of center sometimes, so here is the text:

Reading hibernate file...
Processing addresses 00FFB3000 thru 00FFDEFFF (%100 complete)
Hiberfile successfully read.
Done. Switching to protected mode

...and it didn't work.

Even the stand by function in the final release of Windows 98SE doesn't seem to work right with the hardware I've got. For reference, I'm using an Asus TUSL2-C with a BIOS date of January 4th, 2002 to review these builds.

At least powering off the system works now. If you press the power button to trigger a graceful ACPI shutdown, any shutdown sound you've assigned will play, in contrast to Windows 98. That's all I've got for this build.
