Windows 1.0 Alpha

Author: Anonymous

The next build is the "Alpha" build! The installation process is fairly similar to the last build, only the installer has a different name!

Like before, it'll ask you to delete a bunch of files that don't exist.

I'll tell you, this took a lot less than 11 minutes!

Here's where we see a difference, in that it asks you what type of graphics card you're using. In this case, I'm using an EGA card, as that has the highest resolution. Like before, all modes are in monochrome.

This build has a lot of interesting little programs that involve shapes, oddly. I guess they wanted to show off how well Windows could render shapes?

(PNG)

Here's this insanely neat "Cube" program that shows a really crudely-rendered wireframe cube. I'm actually quite impressed!

Yes, there's a program that literally says nothing but "Hello Windows!" Also, here's a program that does nothing but show a bunch of shapes!

Unlike the previous build, and from here onwards, the command to start Windows is "win". Just like the last build, you must also add the "C:\WINDOWS\BIN" directory to the path parameter. That's it for this build! Onto the Beta build! :)

A monochrome EGA driver was added when Windows 1.0 Alpha Release was sent out to developers and it can be patched to become a monochrome VGA driver. Windows 1.0 Alpha Release with the monochrome VGA driver looks much brighter than with monochrome EGA. (edited)

Paint was believed to be in development when Alpha Release was sent to developers but not included in Alpha Release. I then discovered PAINT.EXE was once on the Alpha Release disks but was deleted some time before 1996 (or when the disks were dumped).

Did you know: Windows 1.0 Alpha Release also feature the famous "Windows is about to crash" message?
